THUNDER BAY — Despite the fact a booster is strongly recommended by public health authorities, less than 60 per cent of the eligible population in the Thunder Bay region has received a third dose of COVID-19 vaccine.
According to data published by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, as of the end of July, 58.4 per cent of individuals 12 years old and over had had three shots.
In a social media message, TBDHU says "If you haven't gotten yours, get it done this week."
Officials say a booster shot helps provide protection from more severe outcomes of COVID-19 and its variants.
People 18 and over who are already boosted, as well as members of certain other groups, may schedule a second booster appointment at a recommended interval of five months (140 days), or a minimum interval of three months (84 days) after the first booster.
Immuno-compromised individuals are eligible for a fifth dose a minimum of 84 days after their fourth shot.
The Ministry of Health advises people to contact their health-care provider to ensure eligibility.
On Tuesday, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre reported a sharp increase in the number of admitted patients with COVID-19.
A hospital spokesperson clarified on Wednesday that the vast majority of cases (95 per cent) were the result of incidental findings – such as from testing when transferring patients – rather than a primary diagnosis.
