THUNDER BAY — A City of Thunder Bay road crew has erected barricades around a damaged traffic barrier on the Central Avenue overpass.
According to Thunder Bay Police, a vehicle left the roadway and struck the metal barrier on the north side of the overpass at about seven o'clock Sunday evening.
A police spokesperson said there was no report of any injuries, but details of the collision were not immediately available.
Matt Miedema, with the city's engineering department, said the barrier did its job, which is to keep vehicles from going over the edge in the event of a collision.
But it could take a bit of time to repair the damage, as it may require the services of a metal fabricator and salvaging components from other structures.
Miedema said the city will do its best to expedite the work.
In the meantime, barricades will remain in place on the sidewalk at the collision site to direct pedestrians away from the broken part of the traffic barrier.
A structural engineer has confirmed there is no damage to the overpass itself, so vehicular traffic is still permitted on the bridge, which links Fort William Road and Maureen Street.
