THUNDER BAY – Police says a driver appears to have missed a turn on Carrick Street early on Thursday morning and wound up in the McIntyre River.
In a release, police say the incident occurred at about 2 a.m., the lone occupant of the vehicle swimming to safety after it was submerged to the roof once it hit the water.
It wasn't a completely happy ending for the driver, who went home after the incident and did not phone police. The driver, who police have not identified, was charged with careless driving and failing to report an accident.
Police received a call at at about 8 a.m from pedestrians walking along a bike path. A water-entry search was conducted, but nothing was found.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene before 9 a.m. and have been working to pull the submerged passenger vehicle from the river.
Police searched the car for evidence after it was successfully removed from the water.
