MONTREAL — Via Rail Canada will resume partial passenger train service between Ontario and Manitoba next month.

Transcontinental service has been suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company says it will restart service between Toronto and Winnipeg on May 17, with one full round-trip per week.

In Northwestern Ontario, the train follows the CN line through Longlac, Armstrong and Sioux Lookout

Via Rail said it made the decision to restore service after evaluating its health and safety protocols including physical distancing measures, enhanced air ventilation systems and improved measures for passenger access, as well as the protection of its workers.

Wearing a mask is required at all times in Via Rail stations and on board trains.
