THUNDER BAY – A 50-year-old man is dead after a grisly three-vehicle highway collision on the Thunder Bay Expressway.
Ontario Provincial Police, who attended the scene, said Gary Maki was ejected from his pick-up truck and pronounced dead at Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre. The incident, which closed the busy highway for several hours last Wednesday morning, occurred just after 7 a.m. between John Street and Oliver Road.
OPP Provincial Const. Diana Cole said officers are investigating the scene in order to get all the details.
“Three people were transported to the hospital,” Cole said. “One male driver was transported and pronounced dead at the hospital.”
Another male driver sustained serious, but non life-threatening injuries, while the extent of a female driver's injuries is still unknown.
A preliminary investigation revealed police believe the driver of a north-bound SUV crossed the centre line of the highway and collided with a south-bound Chevrolet pick-up truck. A second south-bound passenger vehicle was also struck in the collision.
The driver of the heavily damaged Mazda had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life.
