Victim’s Voices: Police target financial abuse of seniors

THUNDER BAY -- The Crimes Against Seniors Unit with Thunder Bay Police is launching a new education campaign about financial abuse.

THUNDER BAY -- The Crimes Against Seniors Unit with Thunder Bay Police is launching a new education campaign about financial abuse.

The Victims Voices DVD's contain powerful stories from the victims of these crimes, in hopes of preventing them from happening to other senior citizens.

A small crowd gathered for the launch of the new program as well as preview of the new DVD's. Detective Constable Diane MacLaurin says they will use them as training tools to help others recognize, prevent and protect themselves from financial abuse.

She says it's the biggest thing she investigates.

And what makes it different from other scams is the psychological and emotional component of being victimized by someone they know and trust.

MacLaurin says the hope is that through the Victims Voices videos and education, it will start conversations to help prevent the problem.
