THUNDER BAY — There's been another close call at Sistonen's Corner, the intersection of Highway 11/17 and Highway 102, where a number of serious collisions have occurred in recent years.
A motorist had to take evasive action Friday to avoid a head-on crash with a transport truck.
In an incident publicized by the Facebook group Skilled Truckers Canada, the operator of an eastbound tractor trailer that was exiting Highway 11/17 took a left turn too soon, and ended up on the ramp meant for traffic that exits Highway 102 heading west toward Shabaqua.
According to the time-stamp on dash-cam video, the near-mishap occurred just before dawn.
The video was recorded in a vehicle that was already on the ramp heading to Highway 11/17, whose driver was forced to pull over quickly to the shoulder to let the oncoming transport pass by.
The motorist turned around to follow the tractor-trailer, and apparently caught up to it a short distance later on Highway 102, enabling the person to get identifying information about the vehicle.
After the incident was reported to the OPP, an investigation led to the driver of the transport truck being charged with careless driving, making an improper left turn and failing to provide supporting documents.
Police identified him as a 47-year-old resident of Saskatchewan.
