THUNDER BAY — Ontario Provincial Police say the driver escaped injury when a tractor-trailer loaded with tires and batteries caught fire on Highway 11/17 in Thunder Bay on Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred shortly before 6:30 a.m. in the area of the Mapleward Road intersection.

Police said the trailer tires appeared to have caught on fire, and the flames spread to the trailer.

The 31-year-old Manitoba-based driver was able to detach the tractor and drive it to safety.

OPP closed the highway in both directions for an extended period while firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue reported late Wednesday that one firefigher was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained at the scene.
