THUNDER BAY — Just seconds after she told her mother everything was fine and there were no trees down on her property, a Thunder Bay woman experienced an uncomfortably close encounter with a giant spruce tree.
The incident was captured on a security camera.
Danielle Luc and her family live on Onion Lake Road.
Her mom had checked in by phone Sunday morning in the middle of a windstorm when gusts of up to 80 kilometres an hour were recorded at Thunder Bay Airport.
"She asked me 'Did any trees fall,' and I said 'No, we're OK.' I hung up, and less than 10 seconds later, a tree hit my house," Luc said.
Fearing her son's bedroom might have been impacted, she ran quickly upstairs to tell him to seek safety in the living room.
"It was scary to say the least. We were shaken up, but no one's hurt. That's the best thing."
It turned out that the tree had fallen precisely between the garage and a guest house before clipping the house itself, but it caused only minimal damage.
After moving to the property last year, the family had removed a number of trees, and planned to take down some more, including the one that narrowly missed causing a calamity.
Mother nature took care of it much more quickly than a power saw would have done.
"One second it was up, and the next second it was down. It happened so fast," Luc said.
She said her husband will at least be able to use the fallen tree for firewood.
