Volunteer accountants to file more than 120 returns for immigrants, low-income earners

THUNDER BAY -- The sometimes painful process of paying the tax man is now underway.

While filing taxes can be difficult for many Canadians, the process is even worse for new immigrants unfamiliar with the tax system of their new home.

But some accountants in Thunder Bay are volunteering their time and skills to help new Canadians file their taxes.

Chartered accounts from across the city were on hand at Multicultural Centre on Court Street to prove free tax preparation assistance.

The program isn't strictly limited to new immigrants, but applicants must have a total household income of less than $35,000 with dependents, or $25,000 without.

It's part of a province-wide program, managed by CPA Ontario.

Accountants in Thunder Bay have been helping new immigrants prepare their taxes for the past 42 years.

The free sessions Tuesday and Wednesday nights are completely booked, and officials say they expect to get through at least 120 returns.
