THUNDER BAY – The defence lawyer representing a suspect in the city’s 10th homicide case of 2014 is unhappy that he still hasn’t seen any of the evidence against his client.
George Joseph, who is representing Jeffrey Luke Achneepineskum against a charge of second degree murder, told the court on Tuesday he still has not received any indication from the Crown on when he can expect to receive disclosure.
The Crown told him they were not able to provide an update at this time.
The investigation began after the body of 51-year-old Rene Sortolovo was found inside his North Marks Street apartment on Oct. 19.
Achneepineskum and a 17-year-old female were both arrested and charged later that week. Police when announcing the arrests said the two were involved in a relationship. They added that one of the suspects was known to the victim.
The identity of the co-accused can’t be disclosed in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act
Robbery is believed to be the motive.
The charges have not been proven in court.
Achneepineskum is scheduled to return to court on Jan. 27.
