Walking with the Mayor

In 11 years, about 120 non-profit organizations have benefited from the $120,000 raised by the RBC Royal Bank Mayor’s Walk. "It’s everything from baseball teams, hockey teams, cadets," said Mayor Lynn Peterson.

In 11 years, about 120 non-profit organizations have benefited from the $120,000 raised by the RBC Royal Bank Mayor’s Walk.

"It’s everything from baseball teams, hockey teams, cadets," said Mayor Lynn Peterson. "This is a really great way for the community to actually raise money for volunteerism in Thunder Bay and for the non-profit organizations that do so much to make this community a better place."

Hosted by Volunteer Thunder Bay, the May 15th event asks participants to collect pledges with a charity of their choice receiving at least 50 per cent of the money raised. The rest of funds go to Volunteer Thunder Bay.

"It’s important for the community because volunteers are everything," said Kayla Cerqueira, volunteer co-ordinator for Volunteer Thunder Bay. "Even if it’s just cleaning parks, they do an awesome job in making this community a better place to live."

Cerqueira said they’re expecting more than 300 volunteer walkers this year and are hoping to have a whole high school come out. They also have a few cheerleading teams already signed up for the Mayor’s Walk.

Peterson said she’s hoping the warm spring weather holds up for the walk.

"I would predict the weather will certainly be better than the year it snowed," she said. "But that didn’t stop people from getting out … This community comes together to make a difference and the bonus I think will be good weather."

The walk starts at the Current River Recreation Centre at 10:15 a.m.; check-in is at 9:30 a.m. and there are distances ranging from two to five kilometres.

"Every year we have more people show up," said Peterson. "There’s entertainment. There’s prizes. It’s a great way to spend a Saturday morning and you’re doing a wonderful thing for the community at the same time."

Registration forms can be found at Volunteer Thunder Bay in Victoriaville or any Royal Bank branch. The deadline to register is May 13. For more information visit http://www.volunteerthunderbay.ca.
