The Boulevard Dam pedestrian walkway is closed for the majority of the week while the city and Ministry of Natural Resources conduct a water flow study.
On Monday city workers were putting some logs into the dam to build the water up, said Gerald Luty, sewer and water north supervisor for the City of Thunder Bay.
“So on Wednesday we’ll be closing the dam walkway again to actually do the study and drain the lake to the point where it is at right now,” he said.
Through the study, the city and the MNR hope to optimize the fish ladder and the flow at the end of Current River where it flows into Lake Superior, Luty said.
That should help with the migration of the rainbow trout that come up the fish ladder in the springtime.
The overall lake level will be raised about 300 millimetres, but on Friday city workers will remove the logs and the lake will return to its normal water level.
The dam walkway will be closed Monday until 4:30 p.m. and then again on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Detour signs to alternative walking routes will be posted.
