UPDATE: Walsh Street reopens after chemical scare (3 photos)

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue called after container of acid begins to crystalize, sparking fear of an explosion.

THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue temporarily blocked off a portion of Walsh Street after receiving a call about a potentially hazardous chemical reaction.

Platoon Chief Shawn Merrifield said the company, Act Labs, called in emergency crews as a precaution.

"They had a chemical that over time had started to change its composition," Merrifield said in a phone interview on Wednesday afternoon.

Unsure what to do and fearful of a possible explosion, company officials decided to bring in the experts to deal with the four, 2.5-litre containers.

Merrifield said his crew made a few phone calls to hazardous materials companies, who did some research and determined the chemical was safe to move. Another company was then called in to dispose of the chemical.

"They weren't sure how to dispose of it," Merrifield said.

"In the end, the danger (was) actually much lower than first anticipated."

Merrifield said crews remain on scene while the chemical is moved, adding he expects them to clear out shortly.
