WAWA, Ont. -- Police have closed Highway 17 at Wawa after high levels of water eroded portions of the roadway, an event that forced the municipality to declare a state of emergency.

Officials with the Superior East Wawa detachment of the OPP say Highway 101, just east of Wawa, is now open.

The OPP is advising motorists to drive with caution for the first 10 kilometres when leaving Wawa. Meanwhile, residents of Michipicoten First Nation and Long Beach Road are not able to leave those areas at this time because of road erosion in several areas.

The Wawa Municipal Public Works Department is now on scene and working to make the road passable for emergency purposes.

The OPP is urging the public to remain off the roadways unless absolutely necessary. Updates are expected later.
