THUNDER BAY - Residents in Thunder Bay are once again being reminded to find ways to reduce waste and think about how our actions impact the environment and community.

EcoSuperior launched Waste Reduction Week on Tuesday, which will run throughout the week until Oct. 25.

The annual awareness campaign is meant to inspire people to follow the six R’s: rethink, refuse, reduce, reuse, repair, and recycle.

Normally the campaign is kicked off at a local school, but due to COVID-19 restriction this year, Waste Reduction Week is going virtual and people are being encouraged to follow EcoSuperior’s social media to see what local groups, workplaces, and individuals are doing to reduce waste.

“Throughout Waste Reduction Week, there will be several presentations happening in schoolyards to teach and inspire the younger generation about the importance of reducing waste,” said Melissa Davidson, program coordinator with EcoSuperior in a media release.

“St. Thomas School, who is actively getting involved this year, has done great waste reduction projects, and even earned a certification from EcoSchools Canada. Stay tuned to the EcoSuperior Facebook page for highlights from today’s presentations.”

This year’s Waste Reduction Week include daily social media highlights on reducing waste, the Waste Reduction Week Nerd Nite Webinar in partnership with Science North on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m., free composter and rain barrel delivery service when ordered between Oct. 19 and 25, Waste Reduction Week project with Confederation College Waste Management students, The Great Pumpkin Compost Collection from Nov. 1 to 10.

“Don’t forget, post your own waste reduction themed photos to our social media throughout the week using the hashtag #WasteReductionWeekTB and show us how you are living low waste,” Davidson said.
