A water main break near a busy south side intersection caused headaches for motorists and business in the area Wednesday.
The water main rupture took place around 1 p.m. and forced the nearby Burger King on Edward Street to shutdown. The break occurred after a contractor began drilling behind the restaurant. The contractor was installing a pipe for a utility company and struck the 12-inch water main.
Mike McLeod, acting manager of the city's environment division, said this type of break is not common.
Water was shut off to businesses and residences along that stretch of Edward Street, and the street remained closed from Arthur to Isabella Streets as crews worked to excavate the area and replace the pipe.
Nearby businesses were hoping to re-open once water to the area was restored.
