New artwork was unveiled at Prince Arthur's Landing Wednesday, the first public art installations at the waterfront to date.
The artwork, produced by local artist Mark Nisenholt, was selected through an open competition with the theme of "Animate the Journey to the End of the Pier." The three digitally produced images are encased between panels of architectural glass, which are fastened to three cedar lantern structures. The images, titled "Paleogirls, the Swimmers and Ulysses" depict human-like forms partially submerged in water. Nisenholt said he spent weeks on the artwork.
The images glow during the daytime from sunlight and will be illuminated at night from an interior lamp. Public Art Committee Chair Bruce Stonehouse said the art unveiled at the waterfront Wednesday is just the beginning.
The budget for the lanterns at the Pier 2 Picnic Docks was $15,000.
