Quitting smoking is a process not an event.

It’s one of the reasons the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre hosted Weedless Wednesday to highlight all of the resources out there to get people to kick the habit.

“More importantly to acknowledge how difficult it is for people to quit,” supportive and palliative care director Scott Sellick said.

“The trick isn’t to not ever fall off the balance beam it’s to get back on every time you do fall off.”

Getting back on takes support from family and friends.

But it also health professionals, products or even prescriptions sometimes. While it’s important to prevent people from ever smoking, it’s also never too late to quit and see positive results to health.

Sellick said up to 70 per cent of some conditions can be avoided by quitting smoking. Around 35 per cent of all cancers can be avoided by quitting too he said.
