THUNDER BAY -- Workers at a Thunder Bay fast-food restaurant have voted to unionize.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union said staff at the Wendy's Restaurant on Memorial Avenue voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to join the union.

Officials with UFCW Local 175 said the 30 mostly young workers reached out to the union because of several concerns including poor workplace conditions, unfair scheduling practices, harassment, intimidation and threats they would be replaced by temporary foreign workers.

The union said it has now reached out to Wendy's management and hope to begin bargaining on a first contract soon.

Efforts to get a comment from restaurant officials were unsuccessful.
