THUNDER BAY -- A flood warning and rising waters on the Whitefish River have led Lakehead Public Schools to send students home early from a rural-area school.

Students at Whitefish Valley Public Schools were dismissed early on Thursday and parents and guardians were to be contacted by a school administrator to arrange for safe busing home or pick-up at the school.

School board officials said the rising waters, combined with the risk of road washouts, were the reasons for the decision.
