THUNDER BAY— City Police are currently containing the area around a Windsor Street housing complex, after a male who is wanted on warrants in southern Ontario fled from police, and barricaded himself inside the complex.

An officer observed the male at an undetermined location just after midnight on Saturday, and attempted to arrest him. The male fled police in a vehicle, and was observed entering the residential complex at 288 Windsor Street.

Residents inside have been evacuated. Police have maintained a heavy presence since 4 a.m. Saturday morning.

Police could not confirm whether contact had been made with the individual, but they are aware of the man's identity.

A command post has been set up and the TBPS Tactical Unit is on scene. Police confirmed detonations have been used as a part of their operational plan.

"There have been a number of loud noises in the area, and that is a response to our tactical response to the situation," Const. Julie Tillbury said.

"It is a resource-intensive operation," Tillbury said. "For the safety of our officers, and the safety of everyone, we are asking people to stay out of the area," Const. Julie Tillbury said.

The area between Junot, Blucher, Picton and Windsor streets has been contained. Pedestrians and motorists are to avoid the area.

Updates to the story will be made as they become available.
