Winter road network opens officially in Northern Ontario
The winter roads network in Northern Ontario has officially opened.
The nearly 3,200-kilometres of roads help to connect 28 remote communities to the permanent provincial highway system.
The opening of the ice roads allow for the transportation of much needed goods to these communities, as well as easier access to health care.
Provincial officials say cold weather in December and January have led to an earlier than usual opening of the ice-road network.
They will remain in service until spring thaw.
