THUNDER BAY - A woman facing charges of second-degree murder and aggravated assault made a brief court appearance on Wednesday afternoon.
Courtney Marie Labelle, 34, appeared before Justice of the Peace Denette Ellard by audio from the Kenora jail to be spoken to.
Duty counsel Patrick Birchard requested Labelle’s matter be put over for two weeks to give her lawyer, Kevin Matthews time to meet with crown counsel.
Ellard endorsed the request and Labelle is set to return to court on May 27 by audio.
Labelle was charged in connection to an incident earlier this year in the 200-block of Victoria Avenue West on Jan. 1.
When officers arrived on scene just after 7 a.m., they located a youth victim who later died at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Police identified the accused as the mother of the young victim. Police said at the time an altercation took place between the victims and Labelle.
A court-ordered publication ban prevents the publication of evidence and information discussed at Labelle's court proceeding on Wednesday.
A 59-year-old man was also injured in the incident and was later released from the hospital.
