Woman facing charges in Shuniah collision

A 74-year-old B.C. woman has been charged with failing to stop at a stop sign following a collision on Highway 11/17 that sent seven to hospital.

SHUNIAH, Ont. - A woman from British Columbia has been charged following a motor vehicle collision east of Thunder Bay in the township of Shuniah that sent seven people to hospital, two with life-threatening injuries.

In a media release issued on Monday, Ontario Provincial Police confirmed a 74-year-old woman from Chilliwack, B.C. has been charged with failing to stop at a stop sign.

The collision occurred on Friday, July 7 just after 3 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 11/17 and McKenzie Station Road.

According to OPP, the 74-year-old woman was driving her vehicle on McKenzie Station Road and failed to stop at the stop sign before entering Highway 11/17. The woman's vehicle collided with an east bound vehicle.

The four occupants in the woman's vehicle were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The three occupants of the vehicle that was struck were transported to hospital with serious injuries, including a four-year-old boy and two-year-old girl who sustained life-threatening injuries.

The children were sent to a London, Ont. hospital for treatment. The two-year-old girl has since been released and the four-year-old boy remains in ICU.
