Two people were sent to the hospital after a woman fell through a bridge walkway and into the Kaministiquia River early Friday morning.

Officials with the Thunder Bay Police Service say the woman fell through the walkway along the west side of the James Street swing just before 4:30 a.m. Friday.

When officers arrived on scene they discovered that a man had jumped in to try and help the woman who had fallen in. The man was believed to be a friend of the female victim.

Police were able to pull both the man and the woman from the river.
Both victims were sent to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Officers on scene discovered that a metal plate on the bridge had come loose, which exposed a beam that the woman had stepped on in the dark, causing her to fall into the water.

CNR Maintenance crews have been called to repair the bridge, and police are expected to remain at the scene until they arrive.
