THUNDER BAY – Construction work has begun on the expansion of St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Work to expand the east wing of the north-side facility began last week, with crews going to work laying the foundation for the $52 million, 100,000 square foot addition.

“We’re excited that there’s finally some activity on site and we will be able to proceed with that process,” St. Joseph’s Care Group president and CEO Tracy Buckler said.

The expansion is expected to take two years and once completed will house the organization’s specialized mental health rehabilitation program.

The work has impacted parking, as people visiting the site now have to either use the parkade or designated drop-off area.
Buckler said so far that is the only disruption at the hospital.

“The new wing obviously attaches to the building there will be some further disruptions as we go through the project but because this is the very early stages we’ll be phasing that in and giving people appropriate notice,” she said.

The new wing could open as early as spring 2017.
