Workers rescued after capsizing near Eabametoong

Three people rescued by helicopter after amphibious vehicle capsizes while working to install fibre-optic internet

EABAMETOONG FIRST NATION – Three people have been rescued by helicopter after an amphibious vehicle capsized on a lake near Eabametoong First Nation.

The crew was working to install fibre-optic internet on Friday when the incident occurred, said Harvey Yesno, the chief of the First Nation which sits about 350 kilometres north of Thunder Bay.

The vehicle had apparently been removed from the lake, about 15 kilometres west of Eabametoong, by Saturday evening.

Yesno said the community had yet to determine whether fuel from the vehicle could have spilled into the lake.

Note: An earlier version of this article stated the vehicle in question broke through the ice on a lake near Eabametoong. In fact, the amphibious vehicle, designed to travel over water, capsized. Tbnewswatch regrets the error.
