Future filmmakers have litterbugs in their sights.

Around 20 advertisements were submitted by local high school students for the first ever Eco Superior anti-litter video contest.

The spots feature everything from Littering Hurts, a funny perspective on the life of a discarded water bottle, to more inspiring messages about saving the planet.

Eco Superior coordinator Karen Copeland said teenagers aren’t targeted very often about littering but high school is the time when students shape their sense of right and wrong.

“There’s a lot of peer pressure so if you can get positive peer pressure then that’s even better,” she said.

Once six finalists were chosen, they hit social media to get people to vote for their video. The top voted video, called “Would You Walk Away?” was done by Westgate students Chelsea Kartinen, Sam Nutley and Kayla Miller. As athletes, the trio wanted to have a sports themed ad.

“The whole idea is if you mess up in a game you’re going to go and fix your mistake just like if you litter and you miss a garbage can you should go back and pick it up and put it back in the can,” Miller said.

Miller said making the video was a great and fun experience. It was also nice to compete for braggin rights with other students.

“It’s really cool to see us and our message getting across to Thunder Bay,” she said.

The video, as well as Littering Hurts, will be broadcast on Thunder Bay Television throughout the summer.

The winners also received $100 and a gift certificate for Boston Pizza.
