Arson suspected

A fire that gutted a vacant Donald Street house Sunday was likely caused by someone who broke into the building, say fire officials. Firefighters were battling the suspicious blaze late Sunday afternoon for four to five hours.

Victim identified

Police have identified the local man killed in a highway crash Saturday. Officials with the OPP say Brandon Melnyk, 28, of Thunder Bay, following a crash on Highway 17 near Ignace.

Weather dampens official start of forest fire season

Fire fighters were busy battling a suspicious house fire on the city’s south side Sunday. Around 22 fire fighters five pumpers and the aerial truck arrived after 3 p.m. Sunday to a house on the corner of Donald Street and Vickers Street.

Kenora OPP investigating hotel death

Police are investigating a death at a Kenora hotel. The OPP were called to the Best Western Lakeside Inn around 3:45 a.m. Sunday for a disturbance. When they arrived a man was found lying on the street and a fourth floor window had been broken.

Man in serious condition after Mission Island crash

A man is in serious condition after a crash on Mission Island Sunday. The car was westbound on 106 th Street when it left the road, crossed a ditch and hit the railway tracks just before 6 a.m. Two of the three occupants were taken to hospital.
