A fire that gutted a vacant Donald Street house Sunday was likely caused by someone who broke into the building, say fire officials. Firefighters were battling the suspicious blaze late Sunday afternoon for four to five hours.

Police have identified the local man killed in a highway crash Saturday. Officials with the OPP say Brandon Melnyk, 28, of Thunder Bay, following a crash on Highway 17 near Ignace.

Despite the winter-like weather, Ontario’s forest fire season officially began on Monday. Because of the fresh snowfalls, officials with Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources are predicting a slow start to the fire season.

Police are investigating a death at a Kenora hotel. The OPP were called to the Best Western Lakeside Inn around 3:45 a.m. Sunday for a disturbance. When they arrived a man was found lying on the street and a fourth floor window had been broken.

A man is in serious condition after a crash on Mission Island Sunday. The car was westbound on 106 th Street when it left the road, crossed a ditch and hit the railway tracks just before 6 a.m. Two of the three occupants were taken to hospital.
