ROCHESTER, MN – The Thunder Bay Bantam A Queens took home the OneHockey Championship in dominant fashion this past weekend in the U14 division in Rochester, Minnesota.
Friday morning, the Thunder Bay Bantam A Queens met the Naperville Sabres U14 team in. The puck dropped and the Queens took off scoring five goals in the opening period, first by Bria Filice. Emma Albertson would figure in on the next three goals scoring one, then setting up Brooklyn Etreni, and then scoring again. Grace Grosjean would also add a goal.
In the second period Albertson would setup Mylee Zechner early on. Filice notched her second of the game on a setup from Sidney Hiscox. Hiscox would then setup Haylie Cote-Stenlund late in the second to make the score 8-0 and then register her 4th assist of the game setting up Cote-Stenlund again in the third. The Queens would reach double digits with Bria Filice would register her hat trick goal in a 10-0 win. Goaltender Camryn Williams would earn her shutout with a 14 save performance.
In their Friday evening matchup, Thunder Bay met the St. Jude Knights U14. Brooklyn Etreni opened the scoring with Paige Rego also scoring to help the Queens jump out in front 2-0 in the first. St. Jude would break another shutout bit, scoring early in the second. Mylee Zechner would regain the 2-goal lead soon after and Grace Grosjean would increase it. 4-1 Queens after two. Grosjean put home a second straight goal and Hayle Cote-Stenlund would also put up one last marker on the scoresheet while Reese Keating was perfect the rest of the way to a 6-1 victory.
Saturday morning, the Queens took on the same team from the previous night in St. Jude. Sydney Mosa started things off with a natural hat trick with Haley Wrigley earning a primary assist on each goal. Cote-Stenlund would break Mosa’s streak with a goal of her own. 4-0 after one.
Darbie Mattson would pick up her first goal of the tournament early in the second and Grace Grosjean scored back-to-back goals in the second and third periods. Camryn Williams would preserve her shutout bid with 13 saves including stopping a penalty shot. Kaitlyn Intini and Bria Filice added late goals to make the final score 9-0.
In their evening game Saturday night, the Naperville Sabres U14 would look to exact revenge for their 10-0 loss the day before. The Sabres did put up a better effort but the Bantam A Queens were still too much for them, defeating the Sabres with a 3-0 win on goals by Zechner, Filice and Cote-Stenlund and a 12 save shutout for Reese Keating.
The Queens 4-0 record put them into the Championship Game on Sunday morning at 8:40am, again, against Naperville, who seemed to be getting stronger with each game as both teams would go scoreless in the opening period as they battled for gold. Thunder Bay would draw first blood late in the second period on a goal by Bria Filice who had a strong tournament all weekend. Naperville would tie it back up midway through the third though at 1-1. With the threat of overtime looming and scoring chances both ways, the draw would finally break as Sydney Mosa broke the tie to give the Queens the go ahead. This lead to a sudden outpouring of goals by Thunder Bay much to the relief of their coaches and parents. Mylee Zechner would get an insurance marker with Grace Grosjean scoring as well, putting the chance of a comeback by Naperville even further out of reach. The final buzzer sounded as the team all celebrated around winning goaltender, Camryn Williams.
In all, the Bantam A Queens went a perfect 5-0, outscoring their opponents 32-2.
