SUDBURY, Ont. – The Thunder Bay bantam Kings got a goal and an assist, via the power play, from Nikolas Campbell to help them defeat the Ajax-Pickering Raiders 5-2 Thursday evening in their opening game at the 37th annual Big Nickel AAA hockey tournament taking place in Sudbury.
Thunder Bay jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on markers from Michael Stubbs and Dawson Lampi before Ajax-Pickering got one back before the first period was complete.
Action in the middle stanza saw the Kings tack on two more as Owen Perala supplied the eventual game-winner while Travis Hensrud had one during a man advantage opportunity.
The Raiders pulled to within two with a shorthanded effort with 4:08 to go, but Campbell iced it thanks to the power play less than two minutes later to round out the scoring.
Thunder Bay outshot Ajax-Pickering 27-10 on the night with Connor Lemieux picking up the win.
The Kings return to the ice twice Friday starting with an 11:15 a.m. encounter vs. the North Central Predators of Orillia before wrapping up the day against the Timmins Eagles at 5 p.m.
The Thunder Bay peewees are also in Sudbury and they begin play Friday at 9:30 a.m. vs. the North Bay Trappers before facing off with the Central Ontario Wolves at 3:30 p.m.
