Border Cats sign Red Storm outfielder, lose Brocato

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay Border Cats have signed outfielder Mark Venice of the St. John Red Storm.

Venice, heading into his junior season, hit .294 last season with St. John, where he was a teammate of former Border Cats outfielder Anthony Brocato, who will head to the Cape Cod League next summer.

The 6-foot-1 Venice is a left-handed batter who smacked one home run, three doubles and a triple in 33 games with the Red Storm in 2016.

He also drove in a dozen runs.

Venice spent last summer with the Adirondack Trail Blazers of the Perfect Game League, where he hit .225 in 28 appearances, striking out 35 times in 89 at bats. He also hit three home runs and collected 15 RBI.
