PHILADELPHIA - Teenager Cyle Larin made history at the MLS SuperDraft on Thursday when he became the first Canadian player to be selected with the first overall pick.

Larin, a 19-year-old forward from Brampton, Ont., was taken by Orlando City SC. He was widely seen as the consensus No. 1 pick.

The previous high for a Canadian pick came in 2013, when midfielder Kyle Bekker was taken third overall by Toronto FC.

Larin scored 23 goals in 39 career games in his two years at the University of Connecticut. As an underclassman, he signed a Generation Adidas contract which will not count against Orlando's salary cap.

Larin has already been capped three times by the Canadian national squad. He is currently in Jamaica with the Canadian under-20 team.

Expansion team New York City FC took Oregon State forward Khiry Shelton at No. 2 and the Montreal Impact selected striker Romario Williams with the third overall pick.

Williams, a 20-year-old Jamaican, scored 18 goals and had five assists in 51 appearances over three seasons at Central Florida.

Toronto FC selected Syracuse goalkeeper Alex Bono at No. 6 and his teammate, defender Skylar Thomas of Pickering, Ont., at No. 11. Toronto FC also picked North Carolina defender Clement Simonin with the ninth overall selection.

At No. 13, the Vancouver Whitecaps selected St. John's defender Tim Parker.

Former Thunder Bay Chill defender Axel Sjoberg went 14th overall to the Colorado Rapids.
