Luke Maw has been named captain of the Lakehead Thunderwolves hockey team.
The fourth-year defenceman was chosen after teammates cast votes in one-one-one meetings with coach Bill McDonald.
“I’m honoured that they’ve given me the opportunity to be the captain of the Lakehead Thunderwolves,” said Maw, a Beeton, Ont. native, in a release issued Thursday by the team.
“I plan to do my best in this role and I’m excited for the upcoming season because I believe we have the right guys in our dressing room to produce a winning team.”
McDonald said the players made a good choice.
“Luke Maw is always the first one to lend a hand to a teammate, and he’s well respected by his peers and that showed in the voting,” McDonald said. “I think Luke and the assistant captains will be a great leadership group.”
The Wolves also announced four assistant captains have been chosen. Fifth-year senior Mike Quesnele and fourth-year forward Mike Hammond with wear the ‘A’ when the team sports its blue jerseys, while senior blue-liner Mitch Fillman and third-year forward Carson Dubchak will wear it when the Wolves are wearing their white jerseys.
Lakehead takes on Waterloo and Laurier on the road this weekend, opening the OUA regular season. They’ll host York at Fort William Gardens next weekend.
