MANKATO, Minn. -- The Thunder Bay Border Cats have one last try to avoid tying a six-year-old futility mark for fewest wins in a half.
The Cats took to the road on Monday and were promptly shutout 5-0 by the Mankato Moondogs, who jumped on Border Cats starter Jordan Thompson early, scoring twice in the first and three more times in the second, all the offence they would need.
Jordan Washam homered and scored twice for the Moondogs to lead the way at the plate.
Mankato starter Robby Evans pitched seven innings of five-hit ball to pick up the victory.
Thompson, who also lasted seven, giving up five runs on nine hits while walking none, took the loss. Andy Weber had two hits in a losing cause.
The Border Cat (6-28) need a win to break a tie with the 2010 Battle Creek Bombers, who finished 6-30 in the second half of the season. Thunder Bay lost a game to a rainout earlier this season and will only play 35 games in the first half.
