Krista McCarville parlayed a steal of one in the ninth end into a 6-5 win over Alison Nimik on Day 2 of the Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts Tuesday in Kenora.
The Thunder Bay skip, who trailed Nimik 2-0 after four ends, evened the match at 2-2 in the fifth, then after surrendering a deuce in the sixth, scored two in the seventh and stole points in the eighth and ninth to go up 6-4.
Nimik (0-2) could only manage a single in the 10th.
Marlo Dahl, who represents the Port Arthur Curling Club, also climbed back to .500 on Tuesday, knocking off former champion Sherry Middaugh 8-5 in her second match of the women’s provincial curling championship. Middaugh dropped to 1-1.
Dahl never trailed in this one, breaking away for good with a steal of two in the seventh.
Dahl takes on defending champion Rachel Homan in the evening draw. Homan needed just nine ends to dispatch Kathy Brown 11-7, improving to 2-0 in the process. McCarville takes on Ottawa’s Jen Hanna, another former champion in the 10-team field.
Hanna (2-0) easily swept past North Bay’s Laura Pickering (0-2), trouncing her 10-2, scoring four in the eighth to put it away.
In the only other Draw 2 match, Tracey Horgan (1-1) downed Cathy Auld (1-1) 8-3.
