THUNDER BAY -- Evan Degrazia has a two-shot lead entering Sunday’s second and final round of the 2016 Keg District Open.
Not only is the first local major title of the season on the line, but also a coveted spot in next week’s Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada Staal Foundation Open.
Degrazia is hoping for a third straight start in the tournament, which will be contested at Whitewater Golf Course.
It was Whitewater where Degrazia fired a one-under 71 on Saturday, making him the lone golfer under par at the District Open, good for a two-shot lead over a trio of competitors, including Chris Gardner and professionals and former District Open champions Jeff Hunter and Walter Keating Jr.
Keating Jr. already has a spot locked up at the Staal Foundation Open, having won the first local qualifier in June.
Brett Shewchuk and Robbie Untinen are a shot back after shooting two-over 74s on Day 1, while Jeremy Kirk, Evan Littlefield and Joe Scharf are five off Degrazia’s lead, completing the first 18 holes of the 36-hole tournament with five-over 76s.
Degrazia won the event in 2014.
Sunday’s final round will be contested at Fort William Country Club, where Monday qualifying for the Staal Foundation Open will take place on July 11.
