Molly Carlson was a double gold-medal winner at this past weekend’s 2014 Speedo Junior Elite Nationals diving competition in Victoria.
The Thunder Bay native captured top spot in both the one-metre and three-metre events.

Carlson outpaced Pointe-Claire, Que.’s Samantha Maiorino 500.15-477.55 in the three-metre competition on Saturday.

“I was just trying to keep calm during the event and that seemed to work well for me,” Carlson said in a release issued by Diving Canada.

“Today I did my dives consistently, which is key. Being my second gold here, it was really exciting to win. I’ve scored 501 once before, but that was at a provincial met, so getting over 500 at nationals feels great.”

Carlson finished third in the 10-metre event on Sunday, despite falling on one of her dives.

Carlson is preparing for the Youth Olympics later this month in China and has already pre-qualified for the world juniors next month in Russia.

A pair of other Thunder Bay divers also took part in the competition. Helena Heiskanen finished 15th in the three-metre event in the 14-15 age group, placing 18th on the platform dive and 23rd in the one-metre dive.

Cristen Merlo was sixth in the platform, 11th in the three-metre and 13th in the one-metre. Heiskanen and Merlo finished seventh in the three-metre synchronized diving event.
