THUNDER BAY – Kam River Fighting Walleye coach Matt Valley will have a veteran presence helping him out behind the bench next season.

The team on Wednesday announced they’ve hired long-time local coaching legend Doug Colbon as an assistant coach for the Walleye’s inaugural campaign.

Colbon has a vast resume of experience, having coached with the Thunder Bay Flyers, Thunder Bay Bulldogs and the Thunder Bay North Stars.

“I am incredibly excited to join the Fighting Walleye organization and work alongside Coach Valley,” Colbon said.

“I jumped at the opportunity to help build the Fighting Walleye into a consistent competitor in the SIJHL.”

Fighting Walleye GM said Colbon is a perfect fit for a young team looking to win right away.

“I am excited to have Doug join our coaching staff. He brings a wealth of hockey knowledge and together with his enthusiasm will make a fantastic team alongside coach Valley,” McCallum said.

Valley agreed wholeheartedly.

“Doug and I have had a great relationship. His diligent work ethic and passion for the game will add a tremendous amount to our coaching staff,” Valley said.

“He has a great understanding of the league and how to help develop players on and off the ice. It is important that we make an impact in the community as an organization right from the start and that is something, I have confidence that we can do adding Doug.”
