Hackner, Burgess and Gordon stay alive in Nipigon

A pair of Thunder Bay rinks have moved on at the Northern Ontario provincial men’s curling championship in Nipigon.

Meanwhile four-time defending champion Brad Jacobs continued his perfect run on Saturday, closing out the round robin with an 8-0 mark, earning him an automatic berth in Sunday’s final. 

Hometown hero Al Hackner, who calls Thunder Bay home, knocked out Jeff Currie (3-5) with a 5-2 win, a three-ender in the seventh the fatal blow that kept his title hopes alive.

Bryan Burgess doubled up Thunder Bay’s Trevor Bonot 6-3, stealing points in the eighth and ninth to secure the win and another match.

Jacobs downed Copper Cliff’s Mike Jakubo 7-2 on Saturday morning. 

In other action Sudbury’s Robbie Gordon moved on with a 7-4 win over North Bay’s Jordan Chandler, who bowed out with a 1-7 record.
