The Lakehead Thunderwolves hockey team will hit the exam break as winners.

Mike Hammond netted a pair of tallies and Keith Grondin scored the game winner halfway through the third period as Lakehead downed the York Lions 5-3 in Ontario university regular season play to cap a weekend sweep at Canlan Ice Sports in Toronto on Saturday.

With the win, No. 7 Lakehead closes the first half of the season with an 11-3-0 record. That mark gives the Thunderwolves sole possession of the West Division lead.

Hammond made the most of powerplay opportunities as he scored the first two goals of the game with a man advantage. After scoring the only goal in the first, he doubled the lead in the second with his eighth of the campaign.

The Lions clawed back to draw even before taking their first lead of the weekend in the waning seconds of the frame. With only four seconds of the clock Jordan Forfar found the back of the net to send both teams to the locker room with a 3-2 York lead.

That lead held only for the first 1:43 before Adam Restoule notched his first OUA goal to tie things back up.

Grondin broke the deadlock at the 11:44 mark as he beat Lions goalie Andrew Perugini with assists from Hammond and Kelin Ainsworth.

Cody Alcock scored his 10th of the season with just more than a minute remaining to provide insurance.

Rookie netminder Justin McDonald made 29 saves to pick up the victory in between the pipes.
