Turnovers were to blame as the Lakehead Thunderwolves suffered their first defeat of the new hockey season on Saturday night.

Jonah Waslayk scored a pair of first-period tallies to stake the visiting Manitoba Bisons to a 3-1 lead and then a pair of giveaways by the Wolves defence proved costly.

Brett Brooks and Justin Augert made the Wolves and replacement goalie Jeff Bosch pay, upping the Manitoba advantage to four.

The teams traded goals in the third, Brennen Dubchak converting on the power play for Lakehead, Brooks scoring late to make the final 6-2.

The Thunderwolves outshot the Bisons 40-34, Justin McDonald taking the loss in net, pulled after the opening period.

Lakehead hosts Laurentian on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Fort William Gardens and again on Saturday afternoon, a rare 2 p.m. start to accommodate Lakehead alumni weekend festivities.
