The bats showed up, and so did the crowd, to Port Arthur Stadium Tuesday afternoon as the Border Cats completed their home-opening series with a sweep against visiting Alexandria.

The Border Cats played before nearly 1,074 fans during a rare Tuesday afternoon affair and managed to finish their brief, two-game home stand with a 7-1 win over the rival Beetles.

The Cats lunchtime menu featured plenty of offence that helped improve the team’s regular season record to 3-4, and gave starting pitcher Wes Parsons the win.

Home bats took control of the game in the bottom of the fourth, collecting five runs on four hits. Cory Kay started the rally with a walk, and was able to score off of Brian Kraft’s double.

The no-out rally continued with single from Tony Viger followed by and RBI single off the bat of James Bonds.

With a pair of stolen bases, a sac fly and a couple more hits, the Cats were able to head into the top of the fifth with a comfortable 6-0 lead.

While both clubs were able to make contact with the baseball, each recording nine hits, it was the Cats that made theirs count.

Now the Border Cats will have to find a way to bring their momentum with them on the road as they head to Mankato to face the Moondogs for a three-game series.

While the season is still early, the Cats have struggled on the road and maintain a 1-4 record when playing south of the border.

The Cats return to Port Arthur Stadium for five games starting Saturday. They will start that home stand at 6:05 p.m. against the Willmar Stingers.
