Irwin nets two in Olympic debut

The Thunder Bay forward scored twice as Canada demolished Slovakia 18-0 in its first game of the Vancouver Games.

Four-time Olympian and two-time gold medallist Jayna Hefford scored three times and added three assists to pace the Canucks, who also got a hat trick from Meghan Agosta.

Carla MacLeod and Gina Kingsburty each scored a pair of goals in the lopsided victory. Also scoring for Canada were Cherie Piper, Sarah Vaillancourt, Caroline Ouellette, Marie-Philip Poulin, Colleen Sostorics and Tessa Bonhomme.

Irwin, who spent two seasons at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, had seven shots in the contest. Next up for Canada is Switzerland on Monday afternoon.
