FORT FRANCES -- Thunder Bay’s Dylan Johnston leads the pack at the 2017 Travelers Men’s West Qualifier in Fort Frances.

The Thunder Bay skip knocked reigning Canadian mixed curling champion Trevor Bonot 6-5, scoring one in the 10th to remain undefeated at 3-0 at the event, which will determine the final three spots at the Northern Ontario play-downs next month in Thunder Bay.

Johnston scored four in the second and one in the sixth, but gave up steals in the fourth and seventh ends and was forced to win it in the 10th.

Fellow Thunder Bay skip Bryan Burgess earlier in the day defeated Colin Koivula 6-2 to improve to 2-1, good for second spot.

Koivula and Sudbury’s Jordan Chandler are tied at 1-2 through four draws.

Bonot finished his week at 1-3.

Koivula takes on Johnston on Sunday morning in the finale, while Burgess will play Chandler.

Five skips have already qualified, including former world champion Al Hackner, Chris Gibota of Sudbury, New Liskeard's Ron Sayer, junior Tanner Horgan of Sudbury and defending champion Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie.
