The Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s volleyball team won just three time in 19 games a season ago.

But for at least a week the young squad tops the OUA East Division standings.

The Wolves kicked off the 2010-11 season on Friday night with a 3-1 win over the Ryerson Rams, in front of a packed house at the boisterous Thunderdome.

LU was led by the stellar play of Vanessa Chorkawy, who had 24 kills and 10 digs. Claire Morrison had five kills on nine attempts and nine digs.

Wolves coach Chris Green sees room for improvement, despite the win.

“We played OK, but still made too many errors, which is typical of a young team. Our focus for tomorrow will be fixing those errors and continuing to grow as a team,” Green said.

The two teams will meet a second time at the Dome on Saturday night. Game time is 7 p.m.
