Lakers, Ice Dogs grab wins in semifinal openers

The Thunder Bay North Stars scored first, but it was the Fort Frances Lakers who had the last laugh on Friday night.

Nick Minerva scored twice to lead the Lakers to a 6-2 win in the opener of their best-of-seven Superior International Junior Hockey League semifinal in Fort Frances.

Dylan Kooner, Carter Chorney, Marco Romano and Mason Meyer also replied for the Lakers. Daniel McKitrick scored both North Stars goals.

The two sides will tangle again on Saturday night.

Game 3 is scheduled for Fort William Gardens on Monday night. 

In the other semifinal, SIJHL MVP Cole Golka scored once and added an assist as the Dryden Ice Dogs opened the other semifinal with a 4-1 win over the host Minnesota Iron Rangers.

Dylan Cusamano, Jonathan Philley and Blake Berg had Dryden’s other tallies. Hunter Routheau opened the scoring in the first for the Iron Rangers.
