Local skiers fare well at Haywood Nationals

WHITEHORSE, Yukon -- Big Thunder Nordic Ski Club members kept making names for themselves on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Haywood National Ski Championships in Whitehorse, Yukon, claiming third spot ahead of larger ski teams in the Junior/Juvenile aggregate team results. 

For some of the younger skiers this high level competition is an opportunity to gain valuable life and racing experience as well as a chance to rub shoulders with giant cross country skiing celebrities such as Alex Harvey.

Big Thunder skiers raced hard on courses with strenuous climbs and technical downhills in the medium distance skate technique competitions. 

The highlight of the day was a gold medal win for National Development Center junior woman Sadie White, followed closely by teammate Mia Serratore in 12th.  Senior women Bryana van Leeuwen and Holly Brown claimed 23rd and 28th respectively.  Heidi Stewart grabbed 11th place in the five-kilometre juvenile girls race.

On the men’s side the juvenile boys were all business in their 7.5-kilometer race with Kai Meekis narrowly missing the podium in fourth followed closely by Aleksi Luoma in 11th and Nicholas Randall in 16th. 

In the Junior Boys 7.5-kilometre competition, Martti Muzyka and Frederick Serratore claimed 33rd and 35th respectively.  Skiing 15 kilometers,Fergus Foster placed 17th in the junior men's race, while Angus Foster (NDC) placed 34th in senior men's division.

In long skate sprints on Wednesday, NDC's Sadie White continued to show top form claiming silver in the junior women’s A final.  Mia Serratore also skied strongly, claiming fifth in the B final.  In junior men Fergus Foster claimed fourth in the B final while Angus Foster (NDC) also claimed fourth in the senior men’s B final.

Racing continues on Thursday with short skate sprints for junior and juvenile categories.  Saturday is the final day of racing with long-distance classic competitions.
