Lakehead University wrestlers are on the hunt for national gold again.

A year after Emma Brightwell and Preston Mikulasik captured top spot at the 2012 CIS wrestling championship, the Wolves will send eight athletes to London, Ont. to try to better last year’s success.

Among the leading candidates to bring home gold is heavyweight Chadd Lee, who captured gold at the OUA championship and also took gold at the national stage in 2009.

Joining Lee on the men’s side are Scott Christian and Dustin Helwig.

Lauro Knowles, who wrestles in the 59-kilogram category, matched Lee’s gold at OUAs and is joined by Emma Horner, Jenny Pranger, Sara Cattani and Kelsey Dayler in London.

“Our wrestlers are ready to go. We've tried to prepare over the last week for certain match-ups and tried to fine-tune some technique for specific situations. We've got some great wrestlers attending the CIS championships this weekend and certainly some capable of bringing home the gold,” said LU coach Brock Curtis.

“By no means will it be easy. Some of our wrestlers are highly ranked, but every one of them will have very tough opponents to face. Each weight class has the best eight university wrestlers across Canada and whoever comes out on top will have truly earned that CIS gold medal."
